Looking for Adventure: Scholarships Allow Student to Study Abroad
Molly McAlister was studying abroad in South Africa when she learned she had received the Arthur and Barbara Grachek Endowment Scholarship, which benefits communication studies students who study abroad. She cried tears of joy.
"Studying abroad is very expensive. Just knowing that these people are willing to help students follow their dreams and achieve their goals is so incredible," she says.
Molly was fortunate to also receive an Education Abroad Office Scholarship and the Hazel B. Hansen International Studies Scholarship in the 2011—2012 school year.
After learning she received the Grachek scholarship, Molly emailed the couple and sent them pictures from South Africa. Since then, they have continued to email and have met to chat over coffee.
"I don't think a lot of people usually do that," Molly says. "I wanted to go the extra mile to really show them my appreciation so that they do this again for another student."
Molly received the Grachek scholarship again in the 2012—2013 school year and again studied in South Africa, where she did an internship with a sporting events company.
"I love traveling. I just can't stay in one place," Molly says. "I'm always looking for my next adventure."
Scholarships like the Gracheks' have made those adventures possible.
"They have helped me so much to be able to travel," she says. "I can't afford to just go whenever I want. With their help, I have been able to do a lot of things that most people will never be able to do."
Molly graduated in December 2013 with a degree in communication studies and mass communications. With the experiences she gained, she was ready to pursue her goal of a career in public relations and event planning.
"I just am truly grateful for people who donate," she says. "I encourage them to keep finding those students who are looking for something bigger. Every student deserves a chance to get a scholarship if they work hard."
