Education Is Key to Life Achievements
Minnesota couple Gary and Jody Anderson share a love of St. Cloud State University and a deep belief that education is key to advancing in life. They're helping today's students by establishing a scholarship in the School of Education.
"St. Cloud State has truly been a very positive place in our lives," Jody says. "That's why we want to do the scholarship—to do that for others."
Jody graduated from St. Cloud State in 1973 in elementary education and taught throughout her career. Gary, a CPA (inactive), graduated in 1977 with a public accounting degree and retired as a director of finance. Both returned to St. Cloud State to obtain graduate degrees: Jody '80, Master of Science, and Gary '94, Master of Business Administration.
Jody's family, the Mortrudes, has a long history with the university. Her father, Gordon, was an education professor at St. Cloud State for 30 years. Her three siblings and mom also have degrees from St. Cloud State.
The Andersons' newly created Dr. Gordon and Thelma Mortrude Teacher Education Scholarship honors Jody's parents.
"My dad was so big on building a relationship with a student, not just on teaching material or a lesson," Jody says. The scholarships will be given to students with high financial need. Preference will be given to students from diverse backgrounds.
"We wouldn't be where we are without the education we received at St. Cloud State," says Gary, who is chair of the Foundation Board. "We're giving back to help another generation realize the importance of education."
